I personally believe exclusivity, if done correctly can reduce waste, especially when it comes to fashion. I recently read an article from Business of Fashion about Pharell’s sneaker launch. The article talked about the white-on-white “Jelly Fish” sneakers and the process to get them, also how unlikely it is that everyone would receive a pair. Despite the other colors launched not having this problem. I did learn about the launch and went to the launch page to see the details and I was intrigued. I liked the entry type process. It makes you think about the purchase and if this is a shoe you want. Only those who want the shoe would move forward because, your entry does not guarantee a pair of sneakers. That produces the exclusivity mindset I have adopted. First come, first serves mentality. I feel it saves the shoe from ending up in a landfill after one year. Pharell made the right move. The article mentioned that just maybe exclusivity with limited sizes was not ideal. But think about this, who really wants the shoe to have and to hold? Who wants the shoe to hype it and resale it? Who is really into fashion like Pharrell expects that will dedicate the time to buy shoes with a purpose.

But that isn’t the only launch or release that has provided the exclusivity route. I listened to a podcast that discussed the reality behind exclusive shoes made with organic cotton. The farmers did not rush the organic growing process of the cotton and made the designers wait. The designers told their growing customers about the delay, and everyone loved it. The customers recognized that they could rush nature to get the new shoes. This cause and effect produced an exclusive shoe because of nature and its production transparency.
